Local DB

Hey All,

I am a new developer at my company and I've been given permission to be creative and learn. One of the things I am very interested in is to have the ability to create my own local databases so that I can throw data together for my explorations.

I was looking at the How to: Build and Deploy LocalDB page yesterday and I could not follow those directions. They appeared to not apply to me because there was no local node in the explorer. Later, I was told that maybe I didnt have the right version of sql server studio. Can you tell me what version I need?

The MVC template I have built has a config file that has already been used to connect to our SQL test server. Can I use that same approach to connect to the local server I am trying to create? What would the connection string look like and please explain how that works. Im quite good at problem solving and the type of logic you need to debug a program, but I need lots of help guys. I swear Ill actually learn something if you take the time to explain every little detail.

TL;DR:

I would like to be able to start running scripts to create tables on a new local database in Mic. SQL Server as soon as possible and then connect to that local data in my local MVC project. I dont have a local db instance yet. Have already looked at official documentation to create. Could not do it. Currently looking at a command line approach. Not sure what version to use. Dont even know what versions exist
